St Peter's College Sam Hunt Writing Competition

in 2011, the Sam Hunt Writing Competition saw a broad range of participation at all levels, and as the judge, Auckland poet, blogger and academic writer Dr Scott Hamilton pointed out, several winning entries promised well in terms of future prospects in literary achievement.

The Sam Hunt Scholar and Essay Prize Winner in 2011 was Anthony Kamphorst

A very big congratulations go to Anthony ~ well deserved!

Sam Hunt Winner Does Well in Libraries Writing Competition

Congratulations to Stefano Stollenwerk Cavallaro!

Stefano, who won the Year 9 level prize in the College’s Sam Hunt Writers' Annual Competition in 2011, has also gained third place in the teenage section (ages 13-18) in the recently held Auckland Supercity Libraries Poetry Competition. Indeed the poem ‘Wolf’ that Stefano entered in the Sam Hunt Competition was the same poem that Stefano also entered in the Libraries Competition. ‘Wolf came to be’ is reprinted below for the pleasure of readers. It is brief, colourful and plain good fun to read.

Wolf came to be

by Stefano Stollenwerk Cavallaro

Wolf came to be.
He got the hunger of the wind
The sharpness of icicles
And made his mouth

For his fur
He got the darkness of space
The sleekness of sound
And the softness of silk

He took the energy of the sun
The strength of steel
The speed of the storm
And made his paws

He took the roar of the wave
The intensity of fire
And the time of the moon
And so the howl now existed

For his eyes
He took the depth of the sea
The silence of the stars
And the wolf was born
