Zac Williams selected for the World U19 Track Cycling Championships
Zac will be part of a 16 strong squad representing New Zealand in the World U19 Track Cycling Championships in August. This event will be extra special for Zac and the team as it is being held in New Zealand for the first time. Invercargill are hosting the event on a track that is reputed to be one of the fastest in the world.
Zac who is the second youngest member of the team and one of only two male sprinters will be competing in the Individual Match Sprint, Kilo Time Trial and Team Sprint. Zac’s goals for the event include breaking the New Zealand U19 match sprint, 200m record. This currently stands at 10.5sec’s. In the kilo time trial he has set his sights on recording a time of 1.03sec and for the Team Sprint the goal is to medal.
Zac’s trains six days a week twice a day. This includes 3 – 4 gym sessions and a number of erg sessions. The heavy loading now will help him ride the biggest gear possible at the World Champs.
In July Zacis spending three weeks in Australia as part of the build up. In the month leading up to the event he will be based in Invercargill.
We look forward to following Zac’s progress and wish him well in his preparations for the World Championships.
1st XV vs Auckland Grammar this Saturday.
Get along and support the 1st XV in what is traditionally one of the biggest matches of the season. Kick off is 2.30pm.
The 1st XV go into the match buoyed by a hard fought 17 – 15 over Onehunga. In an enthralling match where the lead changed four times, the 1 st XV defended superbly to repel sustained periods of attack from Onehunga. Tries to Shem Tatupu and Vince Aso and a sideline conversation from Nu’uNu’u gave the First’s a slender 12 – 10 lead early in the second half.
Outstanding defensive commitment and attitude led by Vince Aso and Trevor Steffany meant that Onehunga were able to breach the line only once in the second half. This was with eight minutes to go. The First XV hit back shortly after with a rare foray into Onehunga’s half in the second stanza. A try to Matt Johnson reclaimed the lead.
The last two minutes of the game were suspense filled as the Firsts defensive capabilities were called into question again. They held firm and were a relieved side when the final whistle was blown.
Stand out performers included openside flanker Trevor Steffany, replacement no.8 Eastern Maleitoa-Brown and impressive mid-fielder Vince Aso. Athony Casey was deservedly awarded man of the match for an excellent all round contribution.
1st XI Football start season with a strong performance
The 1st XI played their first league game of the season at Macleans College in the weekend.Theyfound themselves two goals down after only five minutes. However, following this the First XI had full domination of the game and many goal scoring opportunities.
A Daniel Menzies set-piece was crossed in and centre back Patrick Hayton was at the end of it to header a goal. The side continued to push on to get the equalizer before the half and they did when another Menzies set-piece gave the opportunity for debutant, Hamish Kumar, to get the equalizer when he was found unmarked at the back post. Striker, Davis Browne, converted an excellent through ball from Menzies to take a 3 – 2 lead going into the second half.
It was more of the same in the second half with two further goals to captain Hailemariam which included the goal of the day an extraordinary diving header. Young Myer Crane and Eli Sullivan made their 1st XI debut along with starters Hamish Kumar, Robbie Compston, Tim Hunt and Grayson Howarth in goal.
Final score - 5-3 win St Peters College

Report
On Wednesday, three passionate, keen Middle School Wednesday teams traveled out to Avondale Racecourse for the annual Central Zone Rugby Tournament. With the pressures of last year’s results on them, as well as their own, it was going to be a big day. After the early rounds all three teams were looking good. They were playing a very good style of rugby, considering the weather they were facing. As the afternoon approached us, all three teams found themselves playing Semi Finals Rugby. The Restricted under 45 and 55’s won well and advance through to their respective finals. Unfortunately the Open weight team just missed out going down to Mt Roskill Intermediate in a narrow loss. The under 55’s played exceptional rugby in the final and bet Remuera Intermediate convincingly, however the under 45’s lost in a hard fought final to Waikowhai.
Overall it was a great day, with many boys returning back to school proud of their achievements. A big thank you to Nu’uNu’u and Vince Aso (two current 1 st XV players) who coached the teams. Also a very special thank you to the following boys: Eddie Tongalahi, SakisoniPaseka and Marcel Faaofawho gave up their spots in their St Peter’s team to help St Therese Primary field a team on the day. These boys have shown themselves to be men for others.
