JUNIOR COURSES

Years 7 to 10

Aims

•  to teach a comprehensive range of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
•  to provide support for mainstream subjects
•  to provide a non-threatening, productive environment to maximise learning

The Junior ESOL classes provide intensive language support to international students who have limited English ability. The groups are small to ensure individual assistance and there is an RE component to support the requirements of the special character of St Peter's College. Students are given two English lessons each day as well as the mainstream subjects of maths, science, social studies, PE and art. However if a student needs more English support on entry, this can be arranged. Junior courses are taught by Mrs Kumar and Mr Zhang.

SENIOR COURSES

Years 11 to 12

Aims:

•  To prepare the students for tertiary education and training courses
•  To support the students in their mainstream subjects.

Students need to prepare for NCEA levels 1 and 2. Level 1 is taught in year 11 and Level 2 is taught over two years to allow for the differing needs of the students. Courses aim to give students practice in the four skill areas (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and assessments are given accordingly. Senior courses are taught by Mrs D'Souza and Mrs Parkes

In addition, all students will be given support with mainstream classes in the form of after-school tuition provided by senior academic students from the school. This is an opportunity to improve both your English and the mainstream subject. All senior students are expected to be part of the tutoring programme.

Students who elect to take the Cambridge courses are still able to complete their English requirements within the ESOL programme. They attend two English lessons each day and follow the NCEA programme which gives them the literacy credits that they need to enter a New Zealand university and also the preparation for IELTS and TOEFL if they wish to enter an overseas university.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES:

The school arranges a range of social activities for the international students including trips to the volcanic island of Rangitoto and Rotorua. Social dances with Catholic girls' schools and international sports teams are organised and students are also encouraged to participate in all the activities of the school including the senior school Ball, St Vincent de Paul Youth group, the leadership programme, school church services, camps and retreats.
