Chinese Curriculum Overview

Year 9 Chinese

A one term course introducing Chinese to the students. Students learn about the Chinese culture and learn to communicate simply about themselves and their immediate environment.

We cover

  • Greetings, farewells and other polite conventions
  • Introductions of self and others
  • School objects
  • Chinese character writing
  • Numbers up to 20
  • Ages
  • Nationalities and addresses
  • Days and Dates
  • Classroom instructions
  • Telling time
  • Talking about school subjects and activitie

Year 10 Chinese

A full year course designed to enable the student to communicate about himself, his interests and his immediate environment. This course is a preparation for NCEA level 1.

We cover

  • Revision from year 9
  • Hobbies and past times
  • Habits and daily routines
  • Food items
  • Household activities
  • Asking permission
  • Buying things in shops - discussing quatities and quality
  • Giving opinions about school
  • Buying food at a cafe
  • Talking about how people travel
  • Discussing clothes
  • Talking about likes and dislikes

Year 11 Chinese

A full year course enabling the student to communicate in greater detail about himself and others, and to communicate in familiar or realistic contexts: making bookings, going to the doctor, discussing holidays, going to restaurants etc. Students in year 11 will do NCEA level 1. IGCSE Chinese is a mid year exam and may be sat in June/July of the year in which a student is doing year 12. This will happen for the first time in 2008.

  • Talking about countries of the world
  • Talking about your own country and town.
  • Different ways of expressing Tenses
  • Working with adjectives and adverbs
  • Using pronouns

Year 12 Chinese

A one year course designed to increase the native speaker students' ability to move with ease between the Chinese and English languages.

We cover:

  • Talking about the location of New Zealand
  • Interesting places of NZ
  • Talking about cities of NZ
  • Brief talk about NZ history and culture
  • Location of China
  • Tourist attractions in China
  • Cities and population in China
  • Some historical stories of China
  • Give information about personal details
  • Express and ask about opinions, attitudes and emotions
  • Talk about school rules and regulations
  • Compare schools in NZ and China
  • Supermarkets, flee markets and fairs
  • Chinese sports and NZ sports
  • Different medical systems
  • Talk about holidays in detail
  • Celebration of Christmas and Chinese New Year

Year 13 Chinese

A one year bilingual course designed to help students pass NCEA level 3 assessments.

We cover:

  • Talking about climate in NZ and China
  • Sceneries of New Zealand
  • NZ tourist products and fruit
  • Some historical cities in China
  • Different ways of communication
  • Talking about being modest
  • Several taboo topics of the Chinese
  • Talking about attitude towards money
  • About pursuing leisure
  • Brief talk about Confucius
  • Brief talk about religions in China
  • Talking about different customs of inviting friends for dinner
  • Table manners
  • Different ethnic groups in China and NZ
