Subjects offered within the Mathematics Faculty

.  Mathematics - Years 11 and 12 NCEA

.  Mathematics - Year 13 NCEA Calculus and Statistics .  Mathematics - IGCSE Extended .  Mathematics - AS Level .  Mathematics - A2 Level .  The three top streamed Year 9 classes are prepared for IGCSE Extended .  The top streamed Year 10 class undertakes IGCSE Extended .  The second and third streamed Year 10 classes study for IGCSE Extended .  The top streamed Year 11 class undertakes AS Level .  The second and third streamed Year 11 classes undertake IGCSE Extended .  The top streamed Year 12 class undertakes A2 Level .  The second and third Year 12 classes undertake AS Level .  The top streamed Year 13 class repeats A2 Level or undertakes another option .  The second and third Year 13 classes undertake A2 Level .  The remaining Year 11 - 13 classes study NCEA Mathematics Standards .  The remaining Year 9 and 10 classes study towards NCEA Mathematics Standards .  The 5 th class at Year 11 focuses on gaining 15 credits towards their national record of learning by doing a reduced course.

To establish "Excellence in Learning" with zero tolerance for poor behaviour in classes

To continue to improve the basic numeracy skills of the junior students To successfully implement the Cambridge examinations To make sure that all students gain credits towards their NCEA national record of learning with emphasis on merit and excellence grades To assist students in the understanding of studying and organization of their time

NCEA Mathematics

Year 9 and 10 Prep NCEA
Contact teacher: Dr Ataya

The three classes that are not doing Cambridge exams are prepared for NCEA with the focus for the 3rd and 4th classes aiming for merit and excellences while the 5th class focuses on gaining achieveds. In 2006 they will study; Trigonometry, Algebra, Measurement, Statistics and Number.


Year 11 - 12 NCEA
Contact Teachers: Mr Mustchin and Mr Afungia

This course focuses on elaborating more in depth on the five main strands over nine achievement standards.

Year 13 Statistics NCEA
Contact Teacher: Mr Watt

This course has seven achievement standards which examine further indepth; algebra, time series data, probability distribution and statistical investigations.

Year 13 Calculus NCEA

This course has five achievement standards which examine differentiation, integration, complex numbers, conic sections and trigonometric functions.

 


Cambridge Mathematics

Cambridge IGCSE Extended
Contact Teacher: Mr Brett McMurdoch

This course summarises and extends on basic mathematical strands while introducing new topics such as matrices and proportionality.

Cambridge A/S Level Contact teacher: Mr Brett McMurdoch This course consists of two subjects Pure Maths 1 and Statistics 1. In P1 further algebra skills are learnt and applied to concepts of calculus. In regards to S1, the syllabus contains probability distributions, statistical analysis and random variables.   Cambridge A2 Level Contact teacher: Mr Brett McMurdoch

This course consists of two subjects Pure Maths 3 and Statistics 2. In P3 the syllabus contains more advanced trigonometry, differentiation/integration, vectors and complex numbers. In regards to S2, the syllabus contains further development of random variables, hypothesis testing, poisson distribution, sampling and estimation.
