Sixth Form Sport and Outdoor Education Course
Mission Statement:
To provide a high quality course that promotes learning as an adventure,
and using it as a catalyst for personal growth and development.
Course description:
The purpose of the course is to provide an opportunity for students
who have an interest in outdoor recreation and sport.
Students will gain an appreciation of group dynamics, including leadership
and support roles through a variety of outdoor skills and activities.
An attitude of respect for nature, conservation and for others will
be fostered.
Aims:
- Students will experience the satisfaction of overcoming challenges.
- Satisfy student’s love of adventure
- Help students to make decisions and rely on themselves.
- Develop the ability to work as a team member.
- Develop leadership potential.
- Learn new skills.

Year 11
Module 1. Improving moving
In this module students will learn about and apply knowledge that will
help them to improve their ability in a chosen physical activity, in
this case wrestling. The students will be analyse techniques, use this
information to help them plan and practice for improvement and then
take part in a wrestling competition. The students will investigate
what the
quality of movement is for wrestling, be assessed on their wrestling
ability and identify and explain factors that affected the quality
of their performance.
Students will
- apply anatomical, biomechanical and physiological
knowledge to wrestling (6B3)
- use motor learning principles to improve performance in wrestling
(6B1)
- plan strategies to support themselves and class members as they work
to improve their wrestling ability (6C3)
- investigate safety issues related to wrestling and put a safety management
plan in place (6A3)
Module 2 Sports Education - Lacrosse
In this module students will organise and compete in a sports season.
They will select teams, take on a role with in the team and train and
play through the module culminating in a tournament at the end. Students
will be assessed on their ability to use interpersonal skills that
contribute to the effective functioning of the team.
Students will
- use motor learning principles to acquire and or
refine the skills needed for the chosen activity.(6B1)
- plan and demonstrate strategies, needed to undertake their chosen Sports
Education role, that contributes to the effective functioning
of the team. (6C3)
- will explain and put into practice responsible behaviours to ensure both
physical and social safety of all participants in this
module of work.7A3
Module 3 What else is there?
In this module students will investigate reasons why people get involved
in, or not as the case may be, in physical activity. After looking
at the big picture they then partcipate in a range of physical activity
experiences and begin to understand what motivates them to be involved.
Students will
- investigate how the activity affects their lifestyle
and identify and describe factors that will encourage them
into activity and factors
that may discourage them (6A1)
- investigate a range of reasons that people participate in different activities
(6B4)
- analyse societal influences that can affect peoples understanding of
physical activity or patterns of activity (6D1)

Module 1 Why a sports day?
In this module students will investigate the significance of
sporting festivals and celebrations with particular reference
to school athletic
days
Students will
- Students will critically evaluate societal expectations
and values on the expectation that the school has an athletics
day. (ie school community,
parents, students) (7A4)
- Students will participate in the organisation and or compete in the school
athletics day and evaluate how well it meets the social and cultural
needs (7B4)
- Students will analyse why sporting festivals are an important part of
the school and societal culture and how they may contribute to
healthy communities (6D1)
Module 2 Fit for our sport
In this module students will identify fitness requiremenst for their
own sport and where applicable their position and apply fitness training
knowledge to their own requirements
Students will
- Students will apply methods and principles of training
to a fitness programme for their chosen sport (7A2)
- Students will apply their knowledge of methods and principles
of training to ensure that they manage their fitness training safely
(7A3)
- Students will use their knowledge of exercise physiology when developing
and implementing a fitnesstraining programme for their chosen sport

Module 3 Improvement Plus!
Students will analyse skills and technique required for softball then
use this knowledge to help plan a performance improvement programme.
Students will also be assessed on their softball ability.

- Students will appraise their softball skills and game play
and identify areas to improve (7B1)
- Students will use relevant anatomical and biomechanical knowledge to
improve performance of softball (7B3)
- Students will plan and demonstrate strategies to give constructive feedback
to their partner and other students during the softball module

Module 4 Just Do it!
Students will take part in skateboarding module of work, They will investigate
and apply knowledge of safety requirements and be assessed on their skateboarding
ability.

- Students will apply investigate safety issues related to
skateboarding and plan to minimise any risks (7A3)
- Students will learn and apply physical skills to skateboarding

Module 5 Lead from the front
Students will use the knowledge they have gained in module 3 Improvement
Plus and use it to coach a group of students in the context of touch.
The assessment will be based on their leadership ability and how it helps
the team to work well. They will also be assessed on how well they manage
safety and in particular preventing injury.
Students will
- Students will appraise the touch ability of their group of
students and plan a programme to ensure they are able to work together
as a team
to
play against another team (7B1)
- Students will use interpersonal skills effectively to help their students
develop physical skills and be able to work together as a group
to play against another team (7C3)

Year 13
Module 1
In this module students will investigate the role of the volunteer
in the provision of sporting opportunities. They will then become “volunteers” and
provide lunchtime activities for students.
Students will
- critically analyse issues, attitudes, and practices that
relate to the provision of physical activity opportunities and more
specifically
volunteers in sport (8D1)
- plan and devise strategies to meet the physical activity needs of their
group of students (8B4)
- implement a plan to encourage a group of people to participate in lunchtime
activities, and explain how this contributes to health promotion
(8D3)
- evaluate the effectiveness of the lunchtime activity programme by critically
analysing the relationships that developed (8C1)
Module 2
This module will focus on a student’s ability to observe and analyse
a physical activity. From this analysis they will make decisions about
what needs to be improved and how they will work towards improvement.
- After appraising ability in Badminton students will devise,
apply and appraise strategies to improve game play (8B1)
Students will
- critically analyse their application of scientific and technological
knowledge to their badminton improvement action plan.( 8B3)
- use interpersonal skills effectively to support and encourage peers in
their badminton improvement programme (7C3)
Module 3
Students will identify fitness needs for their chosen winter sport and
plan a programme that will meet their training needs but also the needs
of a balanced and healthy lifestyle for year 13.
Students will
- critically evaluate the impact of participating in a pre season
training programme on their personal definition of Hauora and devise
strategies
that will meet their well being needs (8A1)
- Students will plan implement and evaluate a pre season training programme
for their chosen sport (8A2)
- Students will critically analyse how effective relationships will help
to continue participation and development in their pre season
