Dear Parents and Boys
OLD WINE
(New Wine Skins)
Last Saturday afternoon there was the opening of The Edmund Rice Centre (Ko Tana Puta Manu) at 123 Manukau Road. It was a beautiful and simple ceremony of blessing by the local Te Unga Waka community.
But alongside this opening there has been a journey that started in Mountain Road 70 years ago when Br Pius O’Driscoll opened St Peter’s College.
It was a journey that started in Waterford, Ireland in 1802 when Blessed Edmund Rice founded a hedge-row school for the marginalized boys of Ireland. His vision was to give sight to the blind, free the oppressed, rescue those cast off from the opportunities of society and bring the light of Faith to a new generation of boys.
It was a very successful journey. Hundreds of schools throughout the world were established and millions of students have been influenced by the vision of Blessed Edmund Rice over the 200 years.
Over the last 20 years the Christian Brothers have changed and adapted to the conditions and situations of the times.
2009 is no different.
The number of Christian Brothers teaching in schools has declined but the task of giving sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed etc still remains.
The Edmund Rice Centre is about giving life - new ministries in a contemporary culture.
It has a Justice Centre geared for advocacy and right relationships.
It has the Edmund Rice Camps giving hope to young people who cannot access the joy and fun of being young.
It has a “green shoots” function – to facilitate co-ordination of new ministries that will emerge.
In short, it is about the same task, but different forms of ministry.
Old wine - New wine skins.
In His Peace
