Dear Parents and Boys
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
COLLATERAL DAMAGE
(or Collateral Example)
Two things that have emerged from this global recession are:
ü the demise of individualism and
ü the greater recognition that everything in creation is connected. E.g. The risky lending decision of a New York banker to a Californian business, affects the job security of a Te Kuiti factory labourer!
The recession has also debunked that individualistic arrogance we see in celebrity soaked sportsmen, actors etc. Life is only a matter of following your dreams. “I made it on my own” – type attitude!
In my view, life is about being collateral to each other.
The collateral damage occurs when the holistic nature of life is simply ignored, or not given sufficient emphasis.
Some examples:
Boys educated as prima-donna sportsmen can become arrogant sporting jocks at a later time.
Boys educated as disembodied intellects will emerge as misfits in a workplace organisation in the future.
Collateral damage also occurs among the young when the adults in their lives, fire their emotional salvos at each other. Every teacher has seen the high potential of boys slashed to pieces (truancy, behaviour etc) by family separation, adult feuding, and adult manipulation of their children.
Collateral example on the other hand is the unseen, often unrecognised support of others. It is the glue that enables others to achieve their potential and live life to the fullest.
In every school, in every classroom or every sport field, teachers and coaches are supported by the collateral example of other loyal and faithful teachers, coaches and support staff.
Every family can point to the collateral example of grandparents and friends in the upbringing of children.
Can we minimise the collateral damage among our young men? One suggestion: Parents, when that existential moment comes beckoning – try to delay it until your boys leave school!
Enjoy the Easter break and be grateful that we have a God who believes in each individual personally.

INTERNET CAPABLE CELL PHONES
We have had some major issues with the inappropriate usage of unsupervised internet cell phones at schools.
Parents - some suggestions/questions?
1 Why allow your sons to purchase an internet capable cell phone?
2 If convenience as to your son's whereabouts is your rationale for a phone, why not pay only those parts of the phone bill that relate to "convenience"?
Reminders:
a) Photo usage by phones at school or at times when your son is identified by uniform is not permitted at St Peter's College.
b) Phones must be 'inaudible' and 'invisible' during class times and change of periods.
c) Inappropriate phone use is not permitted.
Phones will be confiscated if there is a breach in a), b), c).
TAX RECEIPTS
Tax receipts for the 2008/2009 tax year will be issued to all families at the beginning of term 2. These will be posted to you along with an invoice for any remaining fees. If you have paid your fees in full, they will still be posted at this time. Please keep your Tax Receipts in a safe place as re-issuing receipts is time consuming and there will be significant delays and costs in re-issuing these receipts.
