Rentokil 1st XV deserve high praise after narrow semi final loss

The 1st XV played superbly in their semi final against Mt Albert Grammar. They went down 8 – 14 in a thrilling match could have gone either way.

The unbeaten Mt Albert Grammar team knew they were in contest right from the outset with the First XV showing plenty of steel and determination. The First’s defence was outstanding throughout the match. They repeatedly knocked back Mt Albert Grammar runners and forced mistakes. Despite this the Mt Albert held the ascendency in both possession and territory in the first half and held a 6 – 0 lead at half time.

In the second half the momentum of the match swung in St Peter’s favor with a Michigan Lam penalty narrowing gap to three points.  A sustained period of attack led to a try to Josh Cocker-Valu. Unfortunately Mt Albert responded with a try of their own to take the lead out to 14 – 8. Despite threatening the line often in the last 10 minutes the Firsts were unable to cross it.

The team did the school proud on Saturday and throughout the season.

Rentokil 1st XV record their biggest ever win over Auckland Grammar

The 1st XV recorded their biggest ever win over Auckland Grammar, 29 – 7, eclipsing the previous margin by four points which was recorded in 1996, 25 – 7.

The First’s made an excellent start with the forwards providing an excellent platform for the backs to launch attacks. Leading the way in the forward exchanges was Matt Vaai, Isaac Isaako and Tain Lam. The first try came from a swathing 20m run down the blind side by Bryn Hall. He added the extra two with a conversion from out wide. The second try also came directly from a scrum. Two well directed long passes placed winger, Josh Cocker-Valu, into a big hole with one man to beat. Speed and a powerful fend saw Josh crash over the line to extend the lead out to 12 – 0. Grammar answered back with a converted try. St Peter’s responded with an outstanding long range try from broken play finished off by DJ Solomona.

The second half saw Grammar have a wealth of possession. However, a combination of high-quality defence and predictable attack meant they were unable to breach the line again. The First’s on the other hand made the most of their opportunity by scoring a valuable bonus point try when first five, Michigan Lam, spotted a gap and accelerated through to score from 25 metres out.

It was fine team performance and places them in a good position to progress through to the semi finals. Their next competition game is against Kings on July 24. This is a crucial game with Kings currently in second position. The support at the Grammar game was outstanding. Peter’s army was in full voice. The team really appreciates your support and look forward to seeing a great turn out for the Kings game.

This weekend the 1st and 2nd XV travel to Gisborne to play in the annual exchange with Gisborne Boys High.

First  XI Soccer score five goals against Westlake

The First XI bounced back from a disappointing performance against Sacred Heart the previous week scored a comfortable, 5 – 2, win over Westlake.  Westlake opened the scoring.  The First XI responded with perhaps the goal of the match with a long range strike from Craig Barretto. Westlake took the lead going into half time with a well taken goal from a corner.

The First’s upped the tempo in the second half and were rewarded with two quick goals from Hendry Ali and Nathanael Hailemariam. From here it become one way traffic with a further two goals from Hendry Ali taking his personal tally in the game to three.

Match of the match was awarded to midfielder Craig Barretto. Left back, Sam Pease, produced a quality performance as did Hendry Ali.

Rentokil 1st XV overwhelms Tamaki 60 – 13

The 1st XV played their best rugby of the season to date to overwhelm Tamaki, 60 – 13, scoring an impressive nine tries in the process.

The St Peter’s forwards led by Sililo Savea, Isaac Isaako and Patrick Tuipolotu delivered quality, front foot ball to the backs. Outside backs Ben Paltridge and DJ Solomona were the main benefactors of this scoring three tries a piece.

A much improved defensive display from the First’s meant Tamaki were never allowed to generate any momentum with the possession they did have. The First’s consistently knocked St Peter’s back behind the advantage line.

The challenge for the side now is to reach this level of performance consistently. The First’s play Otahuhu @ Otahuhu on Saturday and have the opportunity to break into the top four if they score a good win.

1st XI Soccer secure berth in top division at Nationals

The 1st XI capped off an excellent two weeks with an emphatic 3 – 1 win against Rangitoto last Saturday.  The win moves them into fourth at the completion of the first round. In finishing fourth they have secured a position in the top division at the Nationals.

The win against Rangitoto came on the back of two hard fought, 1 – 1, draws against Sacred Heart and Kings.

The First XI dominated proceedings in the first half against Rangitoto and were rewarded with two well taken goals. The first was a scorching strike from the edge of the box by Nathaniel Hailemarian. The second came from a superb cross from mid-fielder, Craig Barretto, to Ethan Galbraith who made no mistake with his header.

Rangitoto tried hard to get back in the game in the second half. However, excellent defensive work from St Peter’s effectively snuffed out all but one of Rangitoto’s attacks. The First XI put the game beyond doubt when  striker sensation,  Nathaniel Hailemarian,  put his second of the day in the back of the net after receiving a pin point pass from Galbraith.

Under 15 Rugby win back Catholic Schools Cup

Over Queens Birthday weekend the U15 rugby side competed in the North Island Catholic Schools U15 tournament. Played at Sacred Heart College the first day saw St Peter’s knock over De La Salle B before a harder than expected game against Taranaki’s Francis Douglas College. After winning the game 17-0 the boys knew that the true test would come on the Sunday against the other undefeated teams De La Salle A and Sacred Heart.

St Peter’s went into their first game against  Sacred Heart without captain Junior Lolohea (11PGN) who had not recovered in time from a knock the previous day. Sacred Heart were fired up after beating highly fancied De La Salle in the first game of the morning. In atrocious conditions St Peter’s played exciting close quarters rugby to come from behind to win 12-6.

This result mean that the game against reigning champions De La Salle would essentially be a final. With a 20 minute turn around between games St Peter’s were beginning to feel the physical effects and went to the break down 0-10. The second half saw stand in captain Clark McLeod (10SMA) begin to take control of every lineout. A panicked De La Salle began making mistakes which were seized on by St Peter’s. With 5 minutes remaining Brodie Lam (10HEN) kicked a penalty to take St Peter’s within striking distance. However, De La Salle’s defence stood firm and it looked as if St Peter’s would have to settle for runners up. However, the boys weren’t done yet. One final strike saw the forwards hammer at the De La Salle line before Vince Aso (11BAR/DWY) sent a long ball out to Taka Vuni (10HEN) who stepped inside 3 tacklers to crash over in the corner. 10-8. A draw would be enough to give St Peter’s the title. Up stepped Brodie Lam. Not a sound except for the swirling wind. Brodie made his approach and struck the ball. Up went the flags.

St Peter’s College 2010 North Island Catholic Schools champions. Well done boys. Men of Heart and Men of Excellence.

Rentokil 1st XV retain Hibernain Shield for another year

The 1st XV withstood a strong challenge from De La Salle to retain the Hibernain Shield for 2010. The First’s ran out eventual winners 22 – 10, scoring three tries to one.

Conrad Lam opened the scoring when he pounced on a De La Salle error. This try was soon followed up by another from second five, Blake Hall, who stormed over from a scrum move. De La Salle responded with a penalty to make the score 12 – 3 at halftime.

Despite having the wind in the second half the First’s struggled to gain quality territory and possession. However, the side’s defensive effort meant there lead never looked threatened. DJ Solomona scored the team’s only second half try.

Josh Cocker-Valu was awarded player of the day for some outstanding defence and powerful running. Bryn Hall had an excellent all round game at halfback. While in the forwards Zac Moimoi and Isaac Isaako led the way in the close quarter exchanges.

1st XV retain Hibernian Shield

The First XV bounced back from a disappointing performance against Mt Albert Grammar to outplay Sacred Heart, 28 – 11. In doing so the side retain the Hibernian Shield and picked up a four try bonus point.

Sacred Heart made the early running taking advantage of numerous unforced errors from the First’s. Fortunately they only had three points to show for it.  St Peter’s slowly began to stamp their authority on the game with the forwards gaining the ascendency.  Conrad Lam opened the scoring when he burst through three would-be defenders.  First five, Michigan Lam, profited from a sharp backline move to score the second try and extend the lead out to 14 – 3 at halftime.

After the break Michigan made it a double while DJ Solomona secured the bonus point with a brilliant individual effort. Bryn Hall slotted four conversions.

Vice Captain, Zac Moimoi, was awarded player of the day with a welcome return to form.

On Saturday the First XV plays Kelston who are currently second on the table. 2.30pm kick off @ The Cage.
