Performing Arts

The annual St Peter’s College Production has become a true highlight on the College Calendar. Each year the production is staged in a real working theatre – The Centennial Theatre – giving both the students and audiences a quality theatre experience. The students involved gain considerable experience both on stage, back stage, playing in the band/orchestra, as well as working sound and lighting. Through their experience in the production, the students have the honour of working with many professionals who are hired to train them in the multi-faceted, rich cultural and immersive experience that is a school production.

Our talented boys get to work with the talented girls from three other Catholic schools; Baradene, Marist and St Mary’s. Many of the boys have been in the production every year since they have been at St Peter’s – our Head Boy, Finn McDonnell, is taking part in his seventh consecutive show this year while many others are on their sixth.

Upward of 150 students, teachers and parents get involved in each show. Many of these return as they succumb to the addiction of working in theatre and they inevitably ‘catch the show bug.’

Last year, our production of ‘Miss Saigon’ won six awards at the annual ‘Showdown Awards.’ We were honoured with the following; ‘People’s Choice Award’ for Best Production, ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ Zane Nathan, ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ Chloe Bagayas, ‘Best Solo Female’ – Gigi, ‘Best Musical Direction’ Catherine Carr, ‘Best Set Design’ John Hellyer with construction by Paul Sommerville, Graham Summers and Chris Stoddard.

This is a night which is intended to celebrate excellence in the performing arts within the Auckland region and is one that our students look forward to in November of each year.

The SPC Production for 2019 will be Jesus Christ Superstar
