Teacher in Charge: Mr Conor Shea
Information: The SPC Strength club is for students wanting to improve their overall strength, with the aim being to compete in strength-based sports, though primarily the sport of Strongman. Students receive training in correct lifting form for primary lifting movements, most specifically for overhead pressing, squatting, and deadlifting, given that these are functional strength lifts.
Competitions: Various competitions take place throughout the year, with Term 1 and Term 4 being when most take place. These occur throughout the North Island, including competitions in Helensville, Clevedon, Penrose, Te Kauwhata, Matamata, Morrinsville, Te Puke, and Tauranga.
Training: The club is open to students of year 10 and older, and trains Thursday lunchtimes, and Tuesday afterschool in the SPC weights room from 1510 to 1610. Further to this, students are welcome to train on Sundays at Get Strength Gym in Penrose with Mr Shea and the coaching team, though additional gym entry fees will be associated with this.
Cost: Tournament and competition costs vary between events.
Equipment: Any appropriate gym clothing is acceptable for training. Students wanting to take the sport seriously should consider purchasing a lifting belt, either pronged or with a lever, appropriate for powerlifting.
