Hockey Trials for the SPC 1st XI will be announced shortly.

Under 15s and other squad trials to be held thereafter.

Team Structure

U15, 2nd and 1st XI grades will play during the week, this means all our players, if they so choose, can also play for clubs on a Saturday or Sunday. We encourage them to pick up club hockey to develop their game – it will also count towards their selection in the premier side. The structure of our teams is as follows:

1st XI

This team is the top group of players, irrespective of year group. An initial squad will be named part way through Term 1 – that will attend preseason fixtures and tournaments. Squad size will be reduced and those who have not been in the final selection will remain in the wider squad but be playing for U15 or 2nd XI for the season. There will be opportunities for call ups throughout the season to fill gaps in the 1st XI due to unavailability.

2nd XI

The 2nd XI is a competitive team that aims to develop skill and strategy. This team will ideally feed into the 1st XI side as well. It is also an opportunity for senior students to try Hockey and represent the college. (Wednesday after school) There are opportunities for players to play for the first XI and also attend wider training with the 1st XI throughout the year.

U15

The U15 team plays Monday afternoons. There are trials for this team and the top players will be selected to play for the u15 team. Trainings are weekly but top players are also encouraged to attend some of the 1st XI sessions and training sessions that are held by external coaches.

Middle school team

Middle school Hockey teams compete on Saturday morning in the club competition (11 aside). We hold trials for the middle school team to establish the top players who can attend zone and potentially AIMS tournaments (these competitions have restricted numbers – e.g. 7 aside).

Saturday hockey is open to all and aims at introducing Hockey to those who are new to the sport and developing a basic skill set to take forward into other junior and senior teams.

Team Selection

There are several aspects that coaches will look at when selecting a team. Criteria for selection include:

– Positions

– Fitness

– Skill Level

– Game Sense

– Attitude

Points to note:

– Teams named at the start of the year are provisional and players will have opportunities for promotion during the season.

– Communication between coach and player is important in terms of explaining reasons why a boy may have missed out on a team.

There will always be disappointment, but a boy’s character is shown in how he reacts to the disappointment.
