The cycling club includes both road cycling and mountain biking, and many students compete in both disciplines.
Mountain Biking trains and competes throughout the year. The first MTB races for the 2022 season are currently planned for 6 March 2022. However, this will be subject to Covid restrictions.
The Road Cycling season is primarily focused on terms 2 and 3, and we start training in term 1.
We encourage anyone who is interested to register with the school and contact the coaching co-ordinators about upcoming training, learn to ride or race events.
If you are new to Road cycling we encourage you to give it a go by coming along to the Learn to Road ride sessions. If you don’t have a bike there are a limited number that can be borrowed.
If you are new to Mountain Biking, a training ride and muster for new riders is planned for early in the first term. If you register as a new rider the coaches will get in touch with more information.
Road Cycling competitions
The road racing season is primarily focused on a series of Team Time Trials, which are held on Sunday mornings at the Pukekohe race track. This venue provides a safe environment for racing, away from any road traffic. There are other events, including the North Island Championships and the National Championships, later in the year.
Mountain Bike competitions
The MTB season is built around a series of 5 schools-only races, spread between early March and late August. There are other races during the year which are open for students to race including North Island cools and Nationals competitions.
Road Cycling training
We do two mid-week training sessions, a morning training ride on Tuesday and one on Thursday afternoon at the school on stationary bikes. Road training is on Saturday mornings. Parents are encouraged to join in training sessions if possible.
Mountain Bike training
MTB training is on Sunday mornings usually at Woodhill – although we train in other locations around Auckland in preparation for races. Parents are encouraged to join in training sessions if they are riders.
Learn to Road ride
To get new members up to speed, there are additional ‘learn-to-ride’ sessions which teach the skills necessary to ride in groups on open roads and work together as a team.
